Helping Children Build Communication Skills, Confidence and Independence

Every child communicates in their own way and develops at their own pace. When communication difficulties begin to affect learning, relationships or everyday life, early support can make a lasting difference.

At The Speech Therapy Centre, we provide specialist assessment and personalised therapy for children and young people with a wide range of speech, language and communication needs. Our Paediatric team work closely with families, schools and other professionals to understand each child’s strengths, identify their needs and create a therapy programme that supports meaningful progress.

Our approach is child-centred, evidence-based and built around the goals that matter most to each child and their family.

Therapy designed around your child

No two children are the same, which is why every assessment and therapy programme is personalised. We take time to understand your child’s communication profile, interests, strengths and the environments in which they learn and interact.

Therapy is practical, engaging and purposeful, focusing on developing the skills that make the greatest difference in everyday life. Sessions may include play-based learning, structured activities, parent coaching and strategies that can be used consistently at home, nursery or school to maximise progress. Our aim is not only to develop communication skills but also to build confidence, participation and independence across all areas of a child’s life.

How we can help

We assess and support children and young people with a wide range of communication needs, including:

  • Speech sound difficulties
  • Language delay and Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)
  • Social communication differences
  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • Selective mutism
  • Stammering (dysfluency)
  • Voice disorders
  • Hearing impairment and cochlear implants
  • Cleft lip and palate
  • Learning disability
  • Developmental verbal dyspraxia (Childhood Apraxia of Speech)
  • Feeding and early eating difficulties
  • Communication associated with complex medical or neurological conditions

Whether your child needs support with saying words clearly, understanding language, expressing themselves or developing confidence when communicating, we provide therapy that is tailored to their individual needs.

Working in partnership

Children make the greatest progress when everyone works together. We believe families are at the heart of successful therapy and work collaboratively with parents and carers throughout the assessment and intervention process.

Where appropriate, we also liaise with nurseries, schools, SENCOs, teachers and other professionals to ensure consistent support across different environments. By sharing strategies and working towards common goals, we help children apply their communication skills in everyday situations.

Comprehensive support

Some children benefit from input from more than one professional. Where appropriate, we offer coordinated multidisciplinary support alongside Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Educational Psychologists and other professionals involved in your child’s care.

This collaborative approach allows us to develop shared goals, provide joined-up recommendations and ensure children receive the right support at the right time.

Flexible assessment and therapy

Appointments are available at our clinics, within educational settings, at home or online where appropriate.

Following a comprehensive assessment, we will explain our findings clearly, discuss your child’s strengths and areas of need, and provide practical recommendations together with an individualised therapy plan tailored to their goals.

Frequently asked questions

What communication difficulties do you support?

We support children with a wide range of speech, language and communication needs, including speech sound difficulties, language delay, developmental language disorder (DLD), social communication differences, autism, stammering, selective mutism, feeding and swallowing difficulties, and communication needs associated with conditions such as cerebral palsy, hearing loss and genetic syndromes.

Do I need a referral from my GP, health visitor or school?

No. You can contact us directly without a referral. We also accept referrals from GPs, paediatricians, schools, nurseries, health visitors and other professionals.

Do you work with schools and nurseries?

Yes. We regularly work with schools, nurseries and other educational settings. We can provide assessments, therapy, classroom observations, staff training, consultations and advice to help children achieve their communication potential across all environments.

Do you offer online therapy?

Yes. Many children can benefit from online speech and language therapy, depending on their age and needs. We also provide face-to-face appointments at our North and South Manchester clinics.

How do I know if my child needs speech and language therapy?

If you’re concerned about your child’s speech, language, communication or feeding skills, an assessment can help identify whether they are developing as expected or would benefit from support. Early intervention can make a significant difference, but it’s never too late to seek advice.

Can parents or carers attend therapy sessions?

Yes. Parent and carer involvement is an important part of successful therapy. We work closely with parents and carers as partners, agreeing shared goals and providing practical strategies to support your child’s progress at home and in everyday life.

How many therapy sessions will my child need?

Every child is different. Following the initial assessment, your therapist will recommend a personalised therapy plan based on your child’s strengths, needs and goals. Some children require short-term support, while others benefit from ongoing therapy.

How soon can my child start therapy?

We aim to offer appointments as quickly as possible. Once you’ve contacted us, we’ll discuss your concerns, arrange an assessment and, if therapy is recommended, schedule sessions at a convenient time.
