Through Island Support, children, adults, families, schools and organisations can access the wider specialist services of The Speech Therapy Centre. This includes children’s and adult Speech and Language Therapy, ASD diagnostic assessments and post-diagnostic support, and specialist services for schools, nurseries and organisations.
Our team will help you identify what support is needed and the most practical way for you to access it.

Flexible Support Built Around You
Living away from the mainland can mean that accessing specialist services requires considerably more planning. We therefore look at each referral individually and consider how appointments can be arranged in the most practical way.
Support can include online appointments, planned outreach visits to island communities and face-to-face appointments at our mainland clinics. Different approaches can also be combined, allowing parts of an assessment or therapy programme to take place remotely while face-to-face appointments are arranged only where they add clinical value.
How we can help
Through Island Support, you can access:
Whether you need an individual specialist assessment, ongoing therapy, support for a child or adult, or want to explore bringing specialist services to your school, organisation or community, we can help you find a practical way to access the right expertise.

Making Specialist Expertise More Accessible
Island communities do not always have consistent local access to every area of specialist Speech and Language Therapy or multidisciplinary ASD assessment. Our aim is to complement existing local provision by providing additional specialist expertise when it is needed.
We can work directly with individuals and families or collaboratively with local schools, healthcare professionals and organisations. This means specialist input can be brought into an existing network of support rather than requiring families or services to start again elsewhere.

Mainland Appointments
For services that require or would benefit from face-to-face assessment, appointments can be arranged at our South Manchester clinic.
The clinic is approximately 15 minutes from Manchester Airport, making it particularly accessible for people travelling from island communities with direct flights to Manchester. Where appropriate, we can also coordinate appointments to reduce the number of separate journeys required.

Outreach & Partnership Working
Island Support is not limited to individual appointments. We are happy to explore planned outreach clinics and partnerships with schools, organisations and local services where there is a wider need for specialist input.
This could involve assessment clinics, blocks of specialist intervention, staff training, consultation or a combination of services. We can work with organisations to develop an approach that reflects local needs, available resources and the support already in place.
